ASIS&T 2002 Information Architecture Summit:
Modeling Access Control Poster
For a competition at the the ASIS&T 2002 Information Architecture Summit in Baltimore, MD, we submitted a poster designed to show Information Architecture practitioners the benefits of visual explanation to their discipline.
The Challenge: Show Multiple Approaches to the Same Problem
Rather than present work from an existing project, we decided to create a new diagram that showed a number of different approaches to access control — a notoriously difficult aspect of Web-site architecture.
By taking on this topic, we addressed a topic of specific interest to information architects. We also challenged ourselves in applying visual explanation to a conceptual problem, rather than a specific case.
Our Solution: Meet the Level of Expertise of the Audience
Knowing the expertise of our audience, we showed both a top-down and bottom-up approach to the access-control problem. Our combination of text and diagrams allowed viewers to quickly grasp the concepts presented, with additional information for those who wished to learn more.
