CFA Institute:
AIMR Publications Web Site
The CFA Institute (then known as The Association for Investment Management and Research or AIMR) enlisted Dynamic Diagrams to put its entire journal collection on the Web. We were tasked to develop not only an information architecture but also a suitable visual design that would reflect both individual journal brands and the identity of the overarching umbrella site.
The Challenge: Accommodate an Expanding Journal Collection
The initial goal of the project was the full-text Web publication of The CFA Digest and The Standards Reporter (later rebranded as the AIMR Advocate). We also had to plan for the release of other AIMR journals, such as the Financial Analyst Journal, as well as content associated with conference proceedings and other publications. The anticipated addition of other journals and content meant that the site's architecture would have to be extensible. However, the site also needed to be easy to maintain and use.
Our Solution: Consolidate But Allow for Growth
By examining the AIMR journal collection and how the site would be used, we developed an information architecture in which important resources would be shared be all the journals. Thus the site would be simpler to maintain and expand without reducing the quantity or quality of information available to AIMR members, CFAs, and the general public. Once the architecture was finalized, we developed a visual design that clearly distinguishes shared tools such as the Search function and Topical Index from journal content, which reflects the identity of each publication's brand.
The publications site was launched in 1999; since then AIMR has updated the site by adding new journals, conference proceedings, and additional publications. The initial focus on building a strong information architecture has enabled AIMR to add publications to the site with relative ease.
