Experience Music Project:
Web Site Architecture
Before the Experience Music Project opened its doors to the public in June 2000, the museum's only public presence was its Web site. EMP engaged Dynamic Diagrams to develop a structure for a new site that would have expanded content and a much wider audience.
The Challenge: Meet the Needs of Different Audiences
EMP's original Web site acted a stand-in for the museum during its construction. The new site would support the museum's public programs while providing information to music fans, musicians, museum visitors, and other audiences. The site needed a structure that would meet the needs of these visitors even as EMP added new content and features.
Our Solution: Define Clear Content Categories Up Front
Based on in-depth discussions with EMP staff and analysis of the site's content, we organized the site into three categories — Explore, Create and Music. To visualize this organization, we created diagrams of both the site's existing structure and our proposed architecture. Additional page diagrams showed how content fit into each category.
EMP staff successfully designed and built the site based on our proposal. A fourth content category, Join, was later added to support the membership department. In the years since, EMP has continued to adapt the original site structure to organize new content and features.
