Biotechnology firm Genentech had recently moved from a distributed technical environment to an integrated enterprise architecture, and needed to explain this transition internally.  The company asked Dynamic Diagrams to develop a visualization as part of its company-wide educational initiative to help employees understand where existing business operations, data, applications, and technology services would fit into the new model.

We began by creating an abstract, object-based model that showed a high-level view of the architecture’s pieces, and then broke down each area of the architecture (e.g., application architecture) into its specific parts (standards, applications, and cross-application integration). To put the architecture in the context of company operations, we then mapped a typical business process—placement of a customer’s order—against the new architecture by matching each step in the ordering process to its appropriate layer and area.
